05/03/10 - May is Better Speech and Hearing Month

May is Better Speech and Hearing Month, a time to raise awareness about communication disorders and to promote treatment and therapy that can assist those who experience problems with speaking, understanding or hearing.

Children enrolled in the Early Learning Centers and those who receive services through the Siskin Children’s Institute-T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital Center for Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics benefit from the expertise of four professionals who specialize in speech and language therapy. Two speech-language pathologists, Kim Kleehammer and Chad Higgs, are contracted through T.C. Thompson Children’s Hospital. Speech therapist, Amanda Arnold, and speech pathologist, Rob Burroughs, are contracted through Hamilton County Department of Education..

The American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) explains that “speech-language pathologists assist children in accessing their education by helping them reach their full communication potential at home and in the classroom environment. Therapy sessions may include language drills, articulation and socialization games that focus on the child’s expressive language and listening comprehension activities that boost a child’s receptive language abilities.”

To the speech-language therapists and pathologists at Siskin Children’s Institute, thanks for all you do in making life better for the children with whom you work.

For more information on speech-language and hearing challenges and therapy, visit the ASHA Web site.
