- For years, the Routines-Based Interview has been a process for assessing child functioning (engagement, independence, and social relationships; EISR) in the context of routines (i.e., times of the day, everyday events or activities). This requires (a) the interviewer to have a thorough knowledge of normal and abnormal child development, (b) enough time to conduct an in-depth “clinical” interview, and (c) the assessor and the informant to be in the same place. The need for a method independent of these three requirements has arisen, so the Measure of Engagement, Independence, and Social Relationships (MEISR) has been developed.
- Common skills needed in 11 home routines constitute the items, which are rated on a 4-point scale.
- The measure is designed for children birth to 5 years of age.
- Family members who know the child’s functioning in home routines complete the measure.
Research
We are recruiting families to complete the MEISR and a short demographics questionnaire. If you are interested in participating, contact Robin McWilliam.
Consultation, Training, and Technical Assistance Opportunities
CTTA in functional child assessment or classification through questionnaires is possible.
Future Directions
- Compare the MEISR to the ICFCY
- Currently developing a version of the MEISR with classroom routines—the ClaMEISR
