Disability Awareness Training

Siskin Children's Institute promotes disability awareness and teaches acceptance in schools and in the workplace. For more information, contact Julie Mickel at 423.648.1758.

For Organizations
Could your organization benefit from disability awareness training? We can help employees, volunteers and community members gain a better understanding of the different types of disabilities. Through simulations, lecture and group exercises, participants break down barriers and develop a new perspective and appreciation for people of all abilities.

For Schools
Fear and misconceptions about disabilities can impact the culture of a school. Kids Like You, Kids Like Me is a multi-faceted program that celebrates kids with disabilities through exploration and education of the similarities and differences. Presented through a partnership between Siskin Children's Institute and Creative Discovery Museum, this program teaches that all kids do the same thing, some just do them differently.

For Teachers
Educating children with and without disabilities in the same classroom using the same general curriculum or modified curriculum can be challenging for teachers. Kids Like You, Kids Like Me Teacher workshop gives general and special educators the tools to educate children of all abilities in an inclusive setting.

For School Administrators
Area school administrators were recently surveyed on their school training needs. Based on those results, the Kids Like You, Kids Like Me  program brings a national speaker to the area to address their needs. This year's topic was on Bullying Prevention and Intervention in Schools. The KLYKLM School Administrator Training was on April 29, 2010 at Siskin Children's Institute.
