A Day in the Life of a Physician Assistant

Meet Megan, a Physician Assistant in our Center for Developmental Pediatrics Program. Below, Megan describes what a day looks like for her here at Siskin:

“Physician Assistants are Master’s level medical professionals who diagnose illness, develop and manage treatment plans, prescribe medications, and often serve as a patient’s principal healthcare provider. With thousands of hours of medical training, PAs are versatile and collaborative.  PAs practice in every state and in every medical setting and specialty, improving healthcare access and quality. I am proud to be the first Physician Assistant on the medical team in the Developmental Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic at Siskin Children’s Institute.  

My job differs from many of my colleagues in other medical specialties.  Due to the nature of our patients with special needs, we spend a significant amount of time assessing the patient, taking detailed medical history starting with mother’s pregnancy, conducting a thorough physical exam, ordering and interpreting lab tests or imaging studies, performing specific standardized tests, all the while formulating a list of possible diagnoses.  Once we have the information gathered, we arrive at a diagnosis.  

At times the diagnosis is challenging for parents.  We do our best to provide up to date information, resources, and referrals to other specialists and therapists to help build a team to support the family/caregivers and child with special needs to help achieve their greatest potential.  If medication is indicated we will discuss the benefits and side effects of the medication and help parents and caregivers know what to expect.  We are available to the parents and caregivers for questions and concerns and follow up as often as needed until the child is stable.  

Siskin is a unique environment in that we have therapists, a psychologist, behavior analysts, teachers, early interventionists, and medical providers all under one roof.  We collaborate well with one another and one of the highlights of this position is seeing how our work in the clinic affects a child’s performance in other areas of their life.  I look forward to serving children with special needs and their families for many years to come.”

COVID-19 Update

Important Reintegration Information

The safety and health of our patients, students, families, and staff is our number one priority at Siskin Children's Institute. Please review the following regarding our reintegration plan and additional information on how we are protecting our families and staff during this time.

All programs and services are currently open and ready to serve.

The Early Learning Center reopened for business on Monday, June 15, 2020.
Temporary business hours for the ELC are from 8:00a to 5:00p.

The Early Learning Center has enhanced safety and health measures to help mitigate the potential risk of COVID-19. These enhanced safety measures were developed based on the guidance provided by the CDC as well as other guidelines issued at the state and local levels. All parents and families will receive packets with detailed information regarding our COVID-19 safety measures to protect their children and our staff.

Developmental Pediatrics and Therapy Services in both our Chattanooga and Nashville locations are now allowing limited in-person services by appointment only. Walk-ins are currently not available and access to our clinics is only allowed if you have passed our comprehensive screening process, detailed in patient appointment communications. If you have questions or need to schedule an appointment please call. 

Telehealth Services Available – We continue to provide medical and therapy services, including applied behavior analysis and home and community-based early intervention therapy, via tele-health during this time. Contact your provider for a referral today or visit our telehealth page for more information.

Institute Leadership
, with the guidance of our medical and therapy teams, has implemented precautionary/sanitation protocols, staff training, and patient traffic flow measures to protect our patients, students, families, and staff. This is a multi-phased approach to mitigate risks associated with COVID-19. Phase one of this plan has already been executed and all patients, students, families, and staff have been notified or trained. We will announce enhancements to our reintegration plan over the next weeks and months based on the guidance provided by local and state health departments and the CDC.
